About the studio
Where architecture meets
landscape.
Every commission begins with the same question: how should the inside of this home relate to what surrounds it? From there, we develop a single design language — materials, proportions, planting, light — that holds across the threshold.
Root & Room is a design studio based in Leiden, founded by Olha Malinovska. We work at the boundary between interior and garden — treating them as one continuous spatial project rather than two separate disciplines.
What We Do
-
(01)
Interior ArchitectureInteriors defined by what lies beyond the window — orientation, seasonal light, garden sight lines. Materials and proportions chosen to continue the landscape inward. -
(02)
Landscape DesignGarden as spatial project: structure, routing, enclosure, openness. Planting, hardscape, and grading shaped around how the space is entered, moved through, and lived in. -
(03)
Terrace & ThresholdThe metres between house and garden matter most. Terraces, covered transitions, and level changes designed as rooms — not as leftover strips between two worlds. -
(04)
Naturalistic PlantingClimate-adapted, layered planting that shifts through the seasons. Native grasses, perennials, and structural shrubs selected for the specific soil, light, and microclimate of your site. -
(05)
Lighting & HardscapingPaths, walls, water features, and lighting that ground the garden after dark. Custom elements in stone, steel, or wood — detailed to the level of the interior.
Selected projects
A closer look at how each project takes shape — from the first garden visit to the finished space.
We believe a home doesn't end at the wall. The garden is not a backdrop — it is a room without a ceiling. When both are designed together from the start, something shifts: the house becomes calmer, the garden gains purpose, and the boundary between them disappears.
How we work
Three stages. One continuous project. Every project runs in three stages. At the end of each one you have something in your hands, not a date for the next meeting.

Let's start with a conversation. Tell us about the place and what you'd like to change — Olha will take it from there. WhatsApp and Telegram work too.
